Organisation: University of Warsaw
Department/Unit: Faculty of Biology, Institute of Evolutionary Biology
Research Field: ENV
Sub-fields / keywords (choose freely): evolutionary biology, endosymbiosis, organelles, microbial eukaryotes
Short description of the department / unit (strengths and scientific achievements, such as publications, patents, etc., important infrastructure – up to 2000 characters with spaces):
The project will be hosted in the Institute of Evolutionary Biology, Faculty of Biology. Specifically, the applicant will join the Genomics and Evolution of Microbial Eukaryotes research team led by Associate Professor Anna Karnkowska. Her current projects revolve around the interactions of protists and bacteria in freshwater environments and the evolution of organelles of endosymbiotic origin.
Dr Karnkowska is a renowned scientist in the field of microbial eukaryotes ecology and evolution. She published 52 papers in specialized and general biology journals (citations: 1419 and h-index: 17). She received several awards for her scientific achievements, including L’oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science Award (2021) and Prof. Pieńkowski Award (2020). Additionally, the proposed supervisor completed two post-docs and several shorter research visits and has an extensive network of collaborations. Associate Professor Anna Karnkowska successfully established her research team in 2017. Over the past six years, members of the Genomics and Evolution of Microbial Eukaryotes group received six research grants in the field of diversity, ecology and evolution of microbial eukaryotes from the National Science Centre and the EMBO Installation Grant. The team has established field work protocols, and has an access to well-equipped molecular laboratories and computational resources. Since 2017 Dr Karnkowska was/is currently supervising: sixteen students and six PhD students, one post-doc and several interns from Erasmus or Fulbright programs. Experience as a supervisor and additional experience as a mentee and mentor in the EMBO programme and local initiatives at the University of Warsaw makes her well-prepared for the role of a mentor.
